Reflecting

Take your time. Choose the questions that open something useful. There is no need to answer every one.

Before you begin, pause.Observe your first response. What thought arises? What assumption sits behind it? Examine the thought before it becomes a conclusion.
OUTCOME

What came out of this?

Reflection sometimes changes what we do. At other times, it changes what we notice, question or understand.

Your answers will gather here as you write.

About the process

Perceptions build on each other

A first impression, an old disappointment or a passing comment can shape what gets noticed next, like snow gathering as it rolls downhill. One observation becomes an interpretation, the interpretation becomes an assumption, and the assumption begins to affect what is noticed next. Left unexamined, this build-up can come to feel like fact.

The process slows that build-up down. It begins with noticing what stands out and considering what it means. It then asks what might be approached differently, examining assumptions, weighing risk and its unintended consequences, and considering sustainability, before deciding what comes next.

The questions can be read as ‘I’ or ‘we’. Reflection often begins with personal noticing, moves into territory that matters collectively and returns to a response one person can take responsibility for.
